Stealing Sheep Luma Disco

Back in 2017 I worked with Stealing Sheep on a spectacular commissioned show for Manchester International Festival.

The Sheep wanted to create a whole new visual landscape for their work to go with the new music they were creating, which later became their acclaimed album ‘Big Wows’.

In the run-up to the Festival, two choreographers, including myself, and a group of dancers took up residency at the delightful Salford’s Islington Mill with Samarbeta, where we created a very special multimedia show: Luma Disco featuring dance, experiments with light and exclusive new tracks. The residency culminated in this one-off performance, an MIF exclusive.

To recreate visually the soundscape I heard in the music I worked with ‘cut and paste’ and pastiche techniques to create sequences drawing on movements found in Sci-Fi TV progammes such as Star Trek, weaving them together with contemporary dance to create something that would represent the fun, kalidescopic, space-age, hybrid sounds and beats of the music.

I also worked with the band themselves to create movements for them to perform on stage. We mixed iconic poses, Sheep classics and inspiration from the music and the other dances we were creating.
