Further, Just Before

“Virginia Wing are happy to present “Further, Just Before”, a collaborative performance with sound artist Rachael Finney, dancer Maria Malone and AV artist Sam Wiehl. The performance explores the both physical and the digital body, exploring themes surrounding gender, space, reality and perception.”

The performance element draws inspiration mainly from the rhythms and atmosphere of the music itself but also the issues present in the lyrics, ideas of constructing and deconstructing identity and building on the work of female pioneers such as 80’s choreographer Trisha Brown.

The show positions the process as performance using task-based, improvised movement and live mixing of visuals and sound.

Mirroring the structure of the pop concert the performance element explores different ideas within each 3-5 minute track as well as developing themes throughout the set.

Representing female bodies in different roles and relationships to challenge expectations and perceptions of female performers. The dance moves through non-dance, pedestrian movement to choreographed moves within improvised scores questioning the role the dancer and frontperson.

“The duo perform dreamy synth-pop from acclaimed latest album Ecstatic Arrow with friends, including Deep Throat Choir and the hotly tipped Mich Cota.

Virginia Wing is Alice Merida Richards, whose languid voice has invited comparisons to Stereolab’s Lætitia Sadier and Broadcast’s Trish Keenan, with synth and sampler from Sam Pillay and Chris Duffin on saxophone.

Recorded in Switzerland, at the home of longtime collaborator Misha Hering, Virginia Wing’s third album unites solemn introspection with joy, layering resplendent avant-garde backdrops with biting lyrics delivered in Richards’ trademark vocals.”

Tuesday 2nd April 2019, The Purcell Room, Southbank Centre, London.
